The BIG SleepOut returns to Digbeth, Birmingham for its 25th anniversary of raising funds and awareness for young homeless people in Birmingham, with 10 local councillors set to sleep in cardboard boxes for the night.
St cartopack Basils, a charity that provides support and accommodation cartopack for homeless youths in the city, hopes that over 400 people will take part in this year s event which takes place on Friday 28 November, matching the number of young people that the charity accommodates every night. The event takes place in winter cartopack each year and challenges young people to sleep in a cardboard box for 24 hours to acknowledge the large number of young people sleeping on our streets every night in Birmingham.
Councillor cartopack Sharon Thompson, who was once herself a resident of St Basil s said of the event, Homeless young people need opportunities to create a more positive mindset cartopack that shows them they can do things. St Basils can offer a lot of things but for that to happen we need society to invest in young people. As this is the 25th year of BIG SleepOut this is the opportunity for Birmingham to get behind this event and St Basils and all this charity does to help young people go on to achieve in life and create cartopack a better future for this city.
Councillor John Cotton, cartopack who can be seen taking part in the St Basil s promotional video commented, “It’s a sad and shocking fact that the number of people rough sleeping has shot up across the country. We’ve got to tackle the root causes and campaign for change. That’s why I’m joining the Big Sleep Out and backing the fantastic work that St. Basils do, day in, day out, to support cartopack vulnerable young people in our community”.
St Basils stress that this is not an exercise in what it is like to be homeless, but a fundraiser to aid those that are. There is a canteen on site selling hot and cold drinks cartopack and food, with a free breakfast opening as early as 4:30am. There will be lots of activities on the night, including a DJ from 6pm and a cardboard dwelling competition judged by local sponsors Jaffabox. Young people from St Basils will provide talks on homelessness, followed cartopack by a midnight service and Christmas carols. The Lord Mayor Cllr Shafique Shah will be attending the service to show his support for the charity.
