Jimmy McDonough likens his books to cars. He said “Shakey,” his exhaustively researched biography of Neil Young, is like a Model T Ford. “It sputters and bangs and it might be a rough ride but it gets you there eventually, after 800 pages,” McDonough said. And his new biography, “Tammy Wynette: Tragic Country Queen” (Viking) — what kind of car is that?
“The Tammy Book is a ’74 AMC Gremlin, rust-colored,” McDonough said. “And I don’t say that disparagingly. I drove a Gremlin. Like a Gremlin, there s something kind of kooky about Tammy. And she s one of a kind. There can be 50 other singers but Tammy walks in — she s a singer s singer.”
McDonough has a fondness for all the great female country artists — Dolly, Patsy, corrugated shipping boxes Loretta — but says Wynette’s music has always cut him deep. “She just goes for broke,” he said. “There s a do or die romanticism about Tammy. If you listen to her ballads - and most of the work was sad, slow ballads - it will make your skin crawl after a while. She was unrelenting. I don t know of another artist in country quite like her.”
As he’s done with past biographies, McDonough has created a fittingly complex portrait of a complex artist, rescuing Wynette from the stereotypes and myths that surround her.
